Starting Out

Basic Needs for Starting Out:
  • 5 to 6 diaper covers: maybe less, maybe more; if you are unsure about the whole cloth diapering thing, start out with less, maybe 2 or 3.
  • 12 to 24+ inserts: if you are just starting out, you probably won't want too many. The number of inserts you want depends on how many diapers you go through a day and how often you plan on washing.
  • A diaper pail or a Wet Bag: for my diaper pail I started out using a regular small garbage can with a lid. If you have a diaper pail you will also need some sort of water-proof Pail Liner as well.
You can toss your wet bag and pail liner in the wash with your diapers, just dump it all in and you don't have to touch anything.
    • I tried using a zippered wet bag for awhile, but I found the smells leaked out too much and the bag would sweat and that was kind of gross.
    • After a year my amazing pail liners started to let smells out and using the regular flip-top garbage can no longer worked for me so I bought a used Diaper Pail for pretty cheap. But I think anything that is airtight would work just fine, but you will definitely want to contain the smell the best you can. I've know some people to use rubbermaid containers.
  • Vinegar or Baking Soda: to clean out your pail every time you wash to control smell.
  • Wipes: You can choose to go with cloth wipes or wet wipes. Either way, you need something.
  • Detergent: You will want to choose a detergent that is free of fragrance and dyes.
