Stripping Your Diapers
When and how to strip your diapers:
We have hard water and over time, it builds up on your diapers and makes them stink all the time! I would strip them with bleach but the ammonia smell would not go away. So then I would rinse with bleach, rinse with vinegar, rinse with baking soda, rinse again, wash, rinse, rinse, dry in the sun. STILL didn't help. Finally a friend gave me a life-saver called Rockin Green laundry detergent. It works like a charm. Just let your diapers soak with the soap for half hour to an hour (depending on the build-up) and then wash like normal. I use it once every 3 weeks or when I notice my diapers retaining smell again.
Ways to Strip your Diapers:
- Rockin Green: a soak once every three weeks has solved most of my smell problems.
- Bleach: try not to use too much, although the covers retain their color great, the bleach does break down prefolds...
- Vinegar: not near as harsh as bleach and doesn't work as well, but if you are health/natural nut then use it instead. Most cloth instructions say not to use vinegar or soda, I've never really had any negative effects from using them but the results haven't been super positive either.
- The Sun! (if you can, try drying in the sun as much as possible, saves on power and is a natural bleach and gets the stains out great!)
